Published in the Journal of Cleaner Production, Visioning a framework for effective environmental management of deep-sea polymetallic nodule mining: Drivers, barriers, and enablers, describes what is required for effective environmental management for this new industry, including the precautionary approach, the ecosystem approach and adaptive management, all of which are highly interdependent and must be operationalized to address the identified barriers.
The study is summarized in the European Commission’s Science for Environment Policy, distributed to over 19,500 policymakers, academics, and business people across Europe to assist in the development of effective, evidence-based policies.
